With Apple starting its manufacturing at Chennai’s Foxconn plant, Samsung is looking forward to expanding its production to India. Currently, Samsung Electronics’ major manufacturing part is based out of Vietnam and South Korea.
Samsung India has planned to use the Production Linked Incentive system, which rewards domestic manufacturing. It wants to shift its focus to India, as the cost of manufacturing smartphones increases in Korea. Samsung plans to make India its production hub and manufacture devices worth $40 billion over the next five years. Therefore, Samsung can make use of India’s incentives.
Samsung headquarters is in Seoul, South Korea. It has one of its leading production hubs in Noida (Uttar Pradesh) since 2018. Samsung India has been manufacturing both the Galaxy M and Galaxy A series handsets in India. Now, they could start manufacturing in India for global markets, especially Europe, West Asia, and Africa.
Vietnam is one of the main exporters of smartphones. And Samsung also manufactures around 50% of its smartphones in Vietnam. Other manufacturing hubs of Samsung include Brazil and Indonesia.
If Samsung expands it production hub in India, following its arch rival Apple, then it would avoid a 20% import duty. Besides, Samsung could reduce the cost of some its smartphones at least in India. As a result, it could lift Samsung India in a competitive Indian Smartphone Market and support ‘Make in India’.
